My Subscriber Asked Me This... (And Answer Can Change Your Business)
Is Your Marketing Plan Missing This?
Hi friends,
Do you always know what to write next?
A subscriber recently emailed me to ask if I've ever been lost on what to write in my emails.
I know the feeling - a blank screen, fingers hovering over the keyboard, wondering what the heck to write in my next email.
And you know what? That dreaded "writer's block" is usually a symptom of a BIGGER problem... a gap in the marketing plan.
I've come to recognise these signs over time...so these days, when I stare at a blank page and writing an email gets harder than it should, I know I need to get back to my marketing plan...Once I fix that, everything will fall into place.
Think of it like this: if you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there... or nowhere!
But don't worry, I've got you covered. Here are 7 golden nuggets I've learned over the years to help you write emails that SELL:
1. Forget Vanity Metrics, Focus on ROI
Open rates, click rates... they're nice, but the REAL measure of success? Cold, hard SALES.
Ask yourself:
How many conversions did my last email generate?
How can I tweak my email or campaign to get MORE sales?
The ultimate goal is not to hit send wondering if you’re getting sales but how many.
2. Build Marketing Assets (and Reuse Them!)
Email campaigns, slide decks, lead magnets... these are your marketing GOLD.
Do you have an asset that works like magic? Don't be afraid to reuse it!
Worried people will notice?
People don't notice as much as you think.
Repetition is KEY to branding.
One of my 2025 goals is to create more valuable free and paid assets for my audience. You can find some of them here on my Gumroad.
3. Get Your Marketing Plan Out of Your Head
A plan in your head is a plan that NEVER gets done.
A solid marketing plan means knowing who are you, what you sell, and how and who your audience is (precisely). You know EXACTLY what you're promoting months in advance. It's your roadmap to success.
I recently published a short e-book that offers an exact roadmap to creating your content marketing plan, including finding your WHY, your ideal audience., choosing your channels and creating a content plan. You can find it here.
4. Segment Your List
Even your most loyal fans have limits. That's why you need to:
Segment your list: Send targeted offers to the right people.
Constantly attract new leads: New eyes = new sales.
Although I love Substack, I believe this platform will need to adapt to writers’ needs, or it will be replaced at the end (similar to what is happening to Medium).
That’s why I recommend using additional email providers (ESP) to automate your emails, build segments and better target content to fit your audience needs. I use Convert Kit. It’s really good for small business owners and creators who do not need complicated automation and sequences. If you need a bigger, more robust system, I recommend Active Campaign.
If you have never used these email providers, this Free Guide will help you choose an email provider and start email marketing.
5. Don't Apologise for Promoting
If you feel the need to apologise for sending an email, DON'T SEND IT.
Confidently promote to those who've shown interest.
When in doubt, send it only to those who have clearly shown an interest. Also, if people unsubscribe when you send offers, that’s a good sign:
They wouldn't buy it anyway
You’re paying your list by number of subscribers, why waste money?
6. Pitch Early (and Often)
Don't wait until the last minute to pitch your offer. Introduce it early in your email sequence. By the way, this is one of the mistakes I made with Marketing Fairy - I waited too long for an offer.
7. Embrace the Power of the Waitlist
Waitlists are like a VIP club for your most eager buyers. They're simple to set up and convert like crazy! Also, it’s a great way to test your product idea. If not many people are on the waitlist, you may need to double-check your idea.
Wait lists or VIP lists are micro-commitments made by a targeted group of people who are most likely to say yes to your offer.
8. Flywheel or Funnel, Just Keep People Flow!
When we talk about the number of subscribers, you must know that it’s not a static list - it should flow: people who are not interested in what you have to do and offer go, and new people are coming.
You can actually work back on how many new subscribers you need based on the number of sales you're targeting. So, ensure you have a system where new subscribers constantly enter your funnels.
