TL' DR: Don’t Build on a Rented Land

Start building your list today.

Hi friend,

My hubby and I recently bought a nice block of land in Perth. We planned to build our home there.

But after a meeting with the first builder, we experienced a cold shower:

“I’d sell that land; it’s too narrow, and you need to cut retaining wall to build a garage”.

“It’s too complicated, the planning department wouldn’t allow you to do this”.

We couldn’t find any builder who was up to the challenge.

But we weren’t worried. Not for a second.

Because we know that in today’s crazy market, having a big piece of land is invaluable.

You can’t build on a rented land.

When you have your piece of Australian dirt, you’ll find a way to leverage that asset.

The same is true for your marketing, my friends.

Yeah, it’s fantastic building on X and LinkedIn. Facebook, TikTok, Medium… But that space is rented, not yours.

All these followers are someone else’s asset, not yours.

An email list is the only way to keep building a real community with your audience.

So, if you’re a solopreneur or small business owner, no matter what product or service you have, please start building your list today.

Don’t rely on the sanity of Elon Musk or Mark Zuckerberg — I heard it’s not something you should count on.

Start building a house on your property.

Start your email list. Build your website. Nurture your own channels other than social media, such as Substack. After a few months, you’ll feel sorry for not starting earlier.

That’s why I love Substack so much. It’s a newsletter, social media and a blog. And you own your land.

How to start your email list in 6 simple steps?

1. Create a lead magnet that interests your target audience and pokes into big pain of your ideal buyer.

2. Keep it short enough and actionable so it can solve one urgent problem they face.

3. Offer that lead magnet in exchange for their email.

4. Sign up for ESP — an email marketing provider Convert Kit*, Active Campaign, Mailchimp, Moodsend*…)

5. Set up your welcome sentence (series of emails to build trust and authority)

6. Start sending regular emails and include your offers/products.
