If I Were to Start my Marketing Again...
Start your marketing on the right foot and avoid mistakes I made in the past
Hi,
I am Angelina. Thank you for reading the Marketing Fairy newsletter - a weekly dose of no-bullshit advice on how to turn great words into more sales. I hope every letter will inspire you to take action and turn readers into customers.
Laser- sharp focus: in life and marketing
When I worked as a journalist in Serbia, I mostly despised “marketers.” Today I know how much I misunderstood marketing back then. Today, I hold a Master's degree in marketing, have more than 10 years of experience in marketing, and work as a marketing specialist in Australia.
But, that’s not nearly as important as my passion for marketing. More specifically, content marketing = writing. Because I know from my experience how transformative good writing can be—how massively it can help you turn visitors into buyers.
When I was starting this newsletter, my ideas were all over the place and I couldn’t decide what the essence of my future sharing would be (you can see I’m avoiding the word niche). I was eager to share everything I learned in the last 12 years. But, that’s messy, overwhelming, and could be useless to you.
What I need to do is to pinpoint the right direction.
To provide the essence of my knowledge. And my mistakes as well.
To give you just actionable bits and pieces.
So today I’ll start from the beginning—how to make it right?
What do you need to be successful in marketing?
It doesn’t matter if you’re starting your marketing as a small business owner, a solopreneur, or a member of the company’s marketing team; the beginning is always the same: start with WHY.
Maybe you think your product or profit is the reason why you do business and are trying to market it, but I assure you, it’s not.
It’s your customer.
And discovering your WHY will help you realise how to serve that customer in the best way to get your business goals (the profit and sales we mentioned before).
Start with a 1-page plan
Start with the basic questions. The best way to form a clear image of your business (or the business you work marketing for) is to start with compiling and analysing a 1-page Canvas business plan. There are many Canvas business plan templates on the Internet, just pick one and start working on it! You can make your own on Canva.
I also love this one from the Wiki page, as it provides more questions and guidance to you.

What do you sell? Who is your target audience? How do you sell to them? What is your value proposition; What channels do you plan to use?
Write all these things down and if you don’t have clarity about them, don’t open an Instagram account, start sending EDMs, or even worse, invest in advertising.
Marketing Fairy Recommends: Neil Patel’s Ubersuggest — FREE SEO tool
If you want to get a good insight into important keywords for your new business, consumer search demand, content performance and competition, on-page technical SEO, and backlinks, and get all of that in the free plan, then Ubersuggest is a great tool to start with.
On top of that, if you decide to go with the more feature-rich paid plan, you’ll have access to not only low-priced packages, starting at just $29 per month (if you've ever had to pay a lot of money for a big SEO tool, you know how cheap this is). Even better, they offer lifetime subscriptions!
I’ve been following Neil Patel for a long time, and although I’m not an SEO expert, I always find his content useful. His platform is easy to use, and understand, even for a beginner in the SEO world. With Ubersuggest, you’ll have a free or cost-beneficial tool that will help you learn more about SEO, as each step is always covered with additional education, and prompts you often on how to improve your SEO performances. Lastly, huge, huge thanks for offering lifetime license purchases! This is so refreshing in the world of unlimited subscriptions that drain your marketing budget!
